Media extenders, devices that pull content off your computer and put it on your TV, have become more popular with the launch of the Apple TV. And that very intuitive device has sparked competition, such as Netgear’s Digital Entertainer EVA8000, which, sadly, is prone to crashes, and some that flat-out don’t work.

So, even though the setup process can be tricky, it’s a relief to find that the MG-350HD from MediaGate actually works pretty well. If you’re willing to get your hands dirty and install a hard drive (not included), the payoff is big, but make no mistake: This gadget isn’t for the iTunes crowd.

I just got a Unicorn MVIX-760HD which is extremely similar in almost all respects.
I don’t yet have a giant hard drive for it so I plugged in an external USB drive with some videos on it and it worked just fine with standard DVD content. I played some spare MP3 files over the network and viewed some images from my laptop over the wireless network and, though the JPGs looked a bit fuzzy on the TV, the 760HD worked very well. So far, at least.
